Water conservation : the need of the hour

‘Water water everywhere, nor any drop to drink’, the time is not far away when these lines of ‘Samuel Taylor Coleridge’ is going to be a bitter truth. The world will be the ancient marinere and all it left with will be brackish and undrinkable water. Won’t it be an irony that the planet known as Blue Planet for its water content is set to face water crisis in near future?

Water is one of the basic needs for sustenance of life on earth but the rate with which it is exploited needs a check on it. Water conservation must be the top priority of every government and non-government organization as many cities in india are queuing up for water. The recent example is Shimla where residents are facing the shortage problem.

70% of world’s fresh water is used in agriculture, 20% in industries and 10% in domestic use.

As a major part of water goes in agriculture, agriculture industry must be encouraged to grow water effecient crops and adopt water friendly irrigation system like flood irrigation, Drip irrigation and Overhead irrigation. Change in farming pattern has posed a major threat on water level.

Rain water harvesting must be adopted at domestic and national level.

Use of low flush or composting toilets should be encouraged.

Use of waste water in flushing or watering plants can reduce wastage of fresh water.

Waste water treatment plants must be installed in rural and urban areas.

Government should pose restriction or control on vehical washing.

Use of various fileration processes like sand filtration, evaporation, sea water desalination can make waste water reusable.

Water boring at domestic level to meet our daily need of water is lowering the groud water level.

Apart from conservation techniques, we need to implement tactics that can help curb water pollution because its worsening the shortage problem. The pollution is reaching underground and contaminating the water beneath the surface which in turn is posing threat to marine as well as human life.

So its high time the world gird up its loins in preparation of either saving water or tackling the coming shortage problem by switching to some substitute but Does water has a substitute?….No!!

Up to you, what do you want to gift your descendants: shortage or sufficiency?
